NEWCASTLE LABOR TO DELIVER HIGH STREET UPGRADE FOR MAYFIELD

Mayfield’s high street shopping precinct at Maitland Road will be renewed under a multi-stage urban renewal capital works project to be initiated by Newcastle Labor Councillors.

Newcastle Labor Councillors will ensure that Maitland Road at Mayfield becomes one of the most complex town centre renewal projects undertaken by the City under the successful Local Centres Program. In 2016, Labor councillors initiated the very successful Local Centres Program, to provide liveable and sustainable local centres that meet community needs.

To date Labor has delivered upgrades to Beresfield, Carrington, Wallsend (Stages 1 and 2), Llewellyn Street Merewether and Joslin Street Kotara and James Street Plaza Hamilton, we are currently working on Mitchell Street Stockton, and Shortland with future projects at Orchardtown Road New Lambton, and additional stages of Wallsend Town Centre in the pipeline.

Labor councillors will present the Maitland Road proposal as a notice of motion at next Tuesday’s council meeting.

Under Newcastle Labor’s plan, Mayfield’s mainstreet will be revitalised with new footpath, road renewal, and drainage upgrades, alongside new street trees, rain gardens, street furniture, lighting, parking and cycleway upgrades.

Labor Councillors will also ensure that the City’s Facade Improvement Scheme is enacted for the Mayfield Local Centre project, which will deliver financial assistance to local small businesses and building owners to modernise their shopfronts and enhance outdoor dining and trade options.

Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said that Labor Councillors would ensure broad community consultation with local businesses and residents to ensure the plan delivers the upgrades that are accessible for the entire community.

“The Mayfield main street upgrade will be one of the most complex undertaken by the City by this transformational program we initiated. These works will deliver improvements for the retail and business precinct right along Maitland Road,” said the Lord Mayor.

“Maitland Road at Mayfield is a significant and historic gateway to our City, and is a much-loved and popular local shopping precinct. But with recent business growth and redevelopment it requires significant urban renewal to bring the public spaces up to the standards our community expects today.”

“The facade improvement scheme will also assist local small businesses to renew their shop fronts and provide enhanced customer experiences like better outdoor dining.”

“Beautification and greening of Maitland Road will give local residents a renewed sense of confidence, pride and liveability in Mayfield as the local area continues to grow.”

Ward 1 Candidate and Deputy Lord Mayor Declan Clausen said the project built on Labor’s record of delivery of local centre upgrades.

“Labor Councillors have so far overseen the delivery of local centre upgrades at Carrington, Merewether, Kotara, Beresfield and James Street Plaza in Hamilton, while upgrades in Stockton, Shortland and Wallsend are underway.”

“As an incumbent Councillor, I have commenced the work needed to deliver the Mayfield Local Centre upgrade”.

“This project will be delivered in partnership with the local business community and ensure that local businesses can continue to grow and thrive with improved accessibility and amenity.”

“With upgraded facades, brand new footpaths, a renewed main road, upgraded drainage, new trees and rain gardens, modern street furniture and amenities along the entire local centre, Mayfield will continue to thrive as one of the most significant town centres in Newcastle.”

“A proposal like this requires experience to deliver, and a council focused on important infrastructure works and financial sustainability. Newcastle Labor is the only team with the ability to deliver these ambitious improvements.
